Denmark builds on Europa toy theme with Lego stamps

Two Denmark Lego Toys stamps showing the popular construction toy will be issued Jan. 2, 2015.

The two stamps are being issued in the multination Europa series reflecting the 2015 theme of old toys.

Lego is a Danish based private company that was founded in 1932. The name “Lego” is derived from the Danish phrase Leg Godt, which translates as “play well.”

In announcing the issue, Post Danmark Stamps stated, “The LEGO Group is the biggest toy manufacturer in Europe and a global market leader for construction toys.”

The 10-krone stamp features a male minifigure (person) with a blue shirt and white baseball cap. The 14.5kr stamp shows a female minifigure with a green shirt and light brown hair.

Lego bricks in different colors float nearby, with various tiles bearing the country name, denomination, the Europa logo, the year date and the word legetoj, which is Danish for “toys.”

A total of 4.1 million 10kr stamps and 1.9 million 14.5kr stamps will be printed in strips of 10 for each denomination.

Post Danmark Stamps will prepare 6,000 first-day covers for sale and 20,000 theme sheets. It is not known what the theme sheet looks like or what its sale price will be.
