Sept. 11 postmark honors Flight 93, national memorial

Sep 11, 2015, 6 AM
The Sept. 11 postmark from Shanksville, Pa., shows part of the memorial for Flight 93, which crashed near the town during the 2001 attacks.

A postmark from Shanksville, Pa., dated Sept. 11, shows a representation of the memorial there for Flight 93, the United Airlines jet that crashed nearby during the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Realizing that their hijacked jet was part of a coordinated attack on the United States, the passengers of the flight fought to regain control from the hijackers, who then crashed the plane into an empty field, killing all aboard, including 40 passengers and crew.

The attackers’ intended target was believed to be the U.S. Capitol.

The crash site is now the Flight 93 National Memorial, part of the National Park Service. The visitor center complex opened Sept. 10.
