U.S. Stamp Notes by John M. Hotchner

Thanks to Linn’s reader John Kozimbo, we have an interesting free gift available for our readers. It is the Union County Across the Centuries commemorative card seen here.

Union County, N.J., has published a series of these cards honoring local citizens who have achieved great things in life. Virginia Apgar (1909-74) was raised in Westfield, N.J. She developed the method known as the Apgar score, which is used in hospitals worldwide to assess the condition of newborns by observing five key health factors.

The U.S. Postal Service issued a 20¢ stamp (Scott 2179) in her honor on Oct. 24, 1994. The stamp is shown on the card. Kozimbo has provided 70 of these cards that will be sent to Linn’s subscribers in the order requests are received until supplies run out.

If you would like to learn more about Union County and its history, visit the website of the Union County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs.

If you would like one of the Apgar cards, send a stamped, addressed envelope with 73¢ postage to me, John Hotchner, at Box 1125, Falls Church, VA 22041-0125.
