Liberty series 2¢ Jefferson issue a workhorse stamp

In Modern U.S. Mail, Richard L. Beecher introduces readers to the one stamp from the popular Liberty series of definitive (regular-issue) stamps that particularly attracts him: the 2¢ Thomas Jefferson that debuted in panes of 100 (Scott 1033) on Sept. 15, 1954. Beecher discusses two interesting covers that he recently purchased, one of which is illustrated here.

Big Blue blog site of worldwide stamps

William F. Sharpe, in Computers and Stamps, provides a detailed review of the Big Blue blog site that focuses on the Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue of Stamps and Covers 1840-1940. Sharpe methodically details the various features on the site and shows how to navigate around what he calls “one of the most complicated sites I have ever visited.” Be sure to read the entire column.

Tip of the week: Canada 1949 Official mail stamp

Stamp Market Tips columnists Henry Gitner and Rick Miller recommend keeping an eye out for the Canada 1949 50¢ Logging, British Columbia Official mail stamp overprinted “O. H. M. S.” “This stamp is the key to Canadian Official mail issues, and is often missing from many collections,” Gitner and Miller write.
