American exhibitors do well at St. Pierre and Miquelon show

Exhibitors from the United States did well in the stamp exhibition held Sept. 24-28 at St. Pierre and Miquelon under the auspices of the Inter-American Federation of Philately (FIAF). The exhibition was judged using International Federation of Philately standards.

Almost 50 exhibits were on display at St. Pierre and Miquelon Expo 2014. In addition to the United States, exhibitors from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, and St. Pierre and Miquelon participated.

A. Don Jones of the United States won a large gold medal and the grand prix international for his eight-frame exhibit “Establishing the United States transcontinental air mail service, May 15, 1918-June 30, 1924.”

Another large gold medal went to Alfredo Frohlich for “Panama — The path between the seas.”

U.S. exhibitors winning gold medals included Kees Adema, “WWII - Effect on mail in Holland and its Colonies”; Darrell Ertzberger, “Postal Stationery of British Honduras”; William Lenarz, “Presidente adhesives with legend ‘Chile Correos’, 1911-1936,” and Ross Towle, “Chile — Presidente Postal Stationery, 1911-1929.”

Adam Mangold won a youth gold for “Building a nation — one state at a time.”

Ertzberger received a large vermeil for “North Carolina Railway Mail to 1885,” as did James Johnson for “Colombia — incoming mail 1922-1929.”

A vermeil went to Ed Grabowski for “The era of the French Colonial Allegorical group type: St. Pierre & Miquelon and French Guiana.”

Conrad Klinkner’s “Games of the Xth Olympiad, Los Angeles, 1932” and Robert Blizzard’s “Overprint varieties of St. Pierre and Miquelon issues” each received a large silver.

In the single-frame category, David D’Alessandris won a gold for “Mail carried by the Cunard Line between Halifax and the U.S.,” and vermeil medals went to Carlos Vergara for “Chile 1 peso Presidente ‘Servicio del Estado’” and K. David Steidley for “An American in Paris: Mail handling by the American Express Co. in Paris.”

Peter P. McCann of the United States chaired the jury, which also included John Hotchner and Steve Schumann of the United States, Richard Gratton and Charles Verge of Canada, and Bernard Jimenez of France.

Jean-Jacques Tillard was the president and commissioner-general of St. Pierre and Miquelon Expo 2014, and Fabrice Fouchard is president of the local stamp club that hosted the event.

Located off the east coast of Canada, St. Pierre and Miquelon is a French overseas department.
