Snowshoe baseball featured on Wisconsin cancel

The northern Wisconsin community of Lake Tomahawk celebrated its centennial with a July 25 pictorial postmark. The town is located in a scenic part of the state and has an unusual claim to fame as the “World’s Capital of Snowshoe Baseball.”

Snowshoe baseball follows the same basic rules as traditional baseball, but the players wear snowshoes and the field is covered with sawdust and wood chips.

According to the town’s website, the sport came about in 1961 when town chairman Ray Sloan “wanted to give summer tourists and residents another source of entertainment.”

The postmark pictured here includes a baseball with two snowshoes and pine trees.
