New Hampshire’s historic coastal hotel celebrates 150 years

The 150th anniversary of the historic Wentworth by the Sea resort hotel located in New Castle, N.H., is commemorated in June with free events for hotel guests and a pictorial postmark.

A member of Historic Hotels of America since 2007, Wentworth by the Sea was built in the 1870s. The structure was originally named “Wentworth Hall” and quickly became a popular summer destination.

The hotel experienced ownership changes until beer magnate Frank Jones purchased it in 1879, transforming it with Second Empire architecture and lavish interiors resembling ocean liner cabins. It became a favorite among high-profile guests, including United States President Chester A. Arthur.

After Jones’ death, Harry Beckwith acquired the hotel in 1920, adding amenities including a saltwater pool and an entertainment complex shaped like a ship, and renaming the hotel Wentworth by the Sea.

Despite closing in the early 1980s and facing potential demolition, the building was saved by local efforts and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 1997, Ocean Properties bought and restored the property. Reopening in 2003 under Marriott management, the hotel is now part of the Opal Collection chain.

Anniversary events offered in the month of June include croquet on the grand lawn, “Menus Through the Years” cooking lessons, hotel history tours and high tea in the lobby.
