An Oct. 9 event at the United Nations headquarters in New York City celebrates World Post Day as well as the Universal Postal Union’s 150th anniversary.

A Postcrossing meetup will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the United Nations headquarters, 405 E. 45th St., in New York City.

A Postcrossing meetup is an informal gathering of postcard-writing enthusiasts who use the Postcrossing website. Socializing and signing postcards are the basics of the event.

The Postcrossing concept involves sending postcards to random individuals around the world, and in exchange, receiving postcards back from different random people.

Thanawat Amnajanan, chief of the United Nations Postal Administration, will be available for a meet and greet at the Oct. 9 event, as will stamp designer Sergio Baradat, who designed the three Universal Postal Union 150th anniversary stamps (Scott New York 1338, Geneva 746 and Vienna 723) issued May 30.

A postcard and U.N. stamps will be available for purchase. Only stamps issued by the United Nations Postal Administration can be used to send postcards from the United Nations.

The United Nations offers a 10 percent discount on its guided tours and purchases from its gift shop for those attending the Postcrossing meetup.

Details regarding visiting the U.N. headquarters are available online.
