Reading Linn’s 87 years later

This 1937 issue of Linn’s Weekly Stamp News, then in its 10th year, is still an enjoyable and informative read with 16 pages filled with ads and articles. The former make for interesting comparisons to today’s prices.

Linn’s Stamp News, originally called Linn’s Weekly Stamp News, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028. Early issues of Linn’s are sometimes found in dealer accumulations of documents, periodicals and photos related to philately. Recently, I was lucky to find the issue of June 26, 1937.

That issue of Linn’s Weekly Stamp News included 16 pages (pages 577-592 of the year 1937).

The cover of the issue, which is shown nearby, features an ad by Linprint Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, for “handsome cacheted covers” for three stamp issues that were to be released later in 1937: the 3¢ Northwest Territory stamp (Scott 795), issued July 13; the 5¢ Virginia Dare stamp (796), Aug. 18; and the Society of Philatelic Americans souvenir sheet (797), Aug. 26.

Also, 10 of the 16 pages in the June 26, 1937, Linn’s Weekly Stamp News were advertising of one type or another.
