The United Postal Stationery Society announced July 18 that its single-frame exhibit award will now be known as the Porter Venn award in honor of the late society officer.

A member of the UPSS for decades, Venn held the combined office of secretary and treasurer from 2002 until 2016 and then treasurer from 2016 to 2021.

“During these two plus decades of service, his contribution to the governance of the society was unparalleled,” UPSS publicity manager Dave Kandziolka said.

Specific examples of Venn’s service include the late member’s dedication in dealing with tax issues and contributions to the UPSS catalogs, according to Kandziolka.

Outside of the UPSS, Venn volunteered at a local sheriff’s office, helped with census collecting and provided treasury services for nonprofit organizations.

“Porter often said that he appreciated all the U.S. had given him and he felt he needed to contribute back,” Kandziolka said.

The UPSS sponsors a multi-frame and single-frame exhibit award at all American Philatelic Society events. The multi-frame award is named after UPSS pioneer Marcus White.

The UPSS board of directors decided to give a name for the single-frame award during its society meeting at the May 24-26, 2024, Rocky Mountain Stamp Show near Denver.

The UPSS is devoted to the collection, research and promotion of worldwide postal stationery. More information about the UPSS can be found on the society’s website.
