Word War I flying ace Snoopy swoops in for January cartoon caption contest

Dec 27, 2023, 11 AM
The cartoon caption contest image for January is the 2001 34¢ Peanuts Comic Strip stamp featuring Snoopy as a World War I flying ace. Entries must be received by Jan. 26 for a chance to win a prize.

U.S. Stamp Notes by John M. Hotchner

The U.S. Postal Service has issued several stamps in honor of the Peanuts comic strip, but my favorite remains the simple Snoopy design of the first such issue, the 2001 34¢ commemorative (Scott 3507).

Part of the reason it is my favorite is that I had a hand in the issuance as a member of the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, but even without that, the image highlights the strip’s most often-seen character, and it is one showing the greatest versatility.

Who else can match Snoopy’s roles as World War I flying ace; attorney to other characters; pet to Charlie Brown; taunter of Lucy; brother of Spike; antagonist of the killer cat next door; and friend of fowl, his buddy Woodstock.

So, let’s use this stamp for the January cartoon caption contest.

All you need to do is put on your pilot’s headgear and scarf, and tell me what you might be thinking or saying about his role or roles in the comic strip; his rival, the Red Baron; stamp collecting; politics; or any other theme that you wish.

There will be two prizes given to the winners: one for the best philatelic line and one for the best nonphilatelic line.

Put your entry (or entries) on a postcard if possible and send it to me, John Hotchner, Cartoon Contest, Box 1125, Falls Church, VA 22041-0125; or email it to jmhstamp@verizon.net. If you send an email, it is essential that you include your postal mailing address.

For each winner, the prize will be a 13-week subscription to Linn’s (a new subscription or an extension). Entries must reach me no later than Jan. 26.
