1. A Princess and her stamps

Gibbons Stamp Monthly  sat down with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand in mid-September to discuss her life, and, of course, her stamps.

“I started collecting stamps when I was about six or seven years old. The Office of HM the King’s Private Secretary at that time did a great deal of correspondence and stamped envelopes were plentiful.” She added, “One of my nannies, who graduated from abroad, also often gave me stamps from letters her friends wrote to her. I saw many beautiful pictures on the stamps and thought I could get some knowledge out of those pictures.”

Princess Maha attributes her love of stamps to relatives who had lavish collections. Her collection grew so large, that she needed help from experts to learn how to categorize them.

She spends her days teaching and handling royal duties, but consistently finds time to travel and collect stamps.

“The stamps and postcards she has collected during her travels have even featured in a book, written by the princess, entitled Pa Pid Phichit Warn (Her Royal Highness’s Scrapbook).”

Quite the impressive collection the Princess has accumilated over the decades.

2. Nordia 2015 changes venues

The Nordia 2015 stamp show and exhibition has undergone an unexpected relocation just weeks before the show is scheduled to open, but the Nordia organizing committee is moving forward with plans for the show at its new venue.

The upcoming Scandinavia-area show will now take place Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at Scandic Infra City, Kanalvagen 10, in Upplands, Vasby, just north of Stockholm, according to information posted Sept. 29 on the show’s website.

3. UN recognizes Pope Francis' United States visit

The United Nations Postal Administration marked the Pope's historic United States visit by issuing a pane of 10 stamps and se-tenant labels.

“The 10 $1.20 stamps feature the 70th anniversary logo of the United Nations, and the label pictures Pope Francis. The UNPA describes the selvage design as featuring “the world surrounded by laurel leaves in open hands symbolizing the togetherness of the planet.”
