What’s new for 2024 Scott Standard Volume 4?

Another catalog season is upon us as we continue the journey of the 155-year history of the Scott catalogs. The 2024 volumes are the 180th edition of the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue.

Volume 4A includes listings for countries of the world Jamaica through Luxembourg. Listings for countries of the world Macao through Mozambique can be found in Vol. 4B.

For the 2024 Scott catalog season, we continue a review of the Portuguese areas, which for Vol. 4 includes Lourenco Marques, Macao, Mozambique and Mozambique Company.

One important note for Macao needs to be emphasized. The values for unused stamps of all periods are for well-centered examples with original gum showing no traces of toning or disturbance. Any deviations would result in a substantial value decrease. For stamps issued without gum, the same condition standards still apply, except for the part about gum condition.

Approximately 2,900 value changes, mostly increases and very few decreases, were made for Macao. In the classic period, one example of an increase was for the 1892 30-real-on-200r surcharged stamp (Scott 45), which moved from $60 and $30 in unused and used condition to $120 and $55, respectively.

For a modern Macao issue, the 2013 block of six and souvenir sheet of the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting issue (Scott 1402-1403) increased from $5 and $7 in unused and used condition, respectively, to $11 and $25.

For both Mozambique and Mozambique Company, numerous value changes were made.

Mozambique had approximately 1,400 value changes with only a handful of decreases. Mozambique Company had more than 700 value changes, also with only a small number of decreases.

For Mozambique, the set of 13 1877-85 Portuguese Crown stamps (Scott 1-14) moved from $882.45 unused to $1,655.15. A large part of the jump was the 20r rose stamp (5), which increased substantially in value in unused condition. The value is now italicized to reflect an item that does not trade frequently.

Lourenco Marques was also reviewed, and almost every value changed. Most values increased slightly compared to values for the other countries already mentioned.

Mexico was also extensively reviewed, and more than 4,000 value changes were recorded. Many of the changes were increases. One example was the first special delivery stamp, the 1919 20-centavo Motorcycle Postman (Scott E1), which advanced from $70 unused to $110.
