Wonders of America pane spreads fun of stamps
Stamp Market Tips by Henry Gitner and Rick Miller
On May 27, 2006, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of 40 se-tenant (side-by-side) 39¢ Wonders of America stamps in panes of 40 (Scott 4072a).
The stamps were designed by Richard Sheaff and printed by Avery Dennison. The design subjects feature native wildlife, geographic landmarks and natural wonders.
The tagged self-adhesive stamps have gauge 10¾ serpentine die cuts. Uncut press sheets of two panes of 40 were also sold to the public.
The Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps and Covers values the mint pane of 40 at $32 (roughly double face value, the Scott catalog minimum for most mint new issues), against a postage value of $15.60.
The mint pane of 40 is not currently hot in the philatelic marketplace, but it is a beautiful and iconic issue that is easy to share with family and friends to help spread the fun of stamp collecting.
The mint pane of 40 is a good buy in the $20 to $30 price range.
Check closely for condition when buying because the pane is easily damaged due to the black selvage, which shows nicks and scratches readily, and the die cuts in the selvage on three sides, which easily separate.
