World Stamp Show-NY 2016 offers news update

The next international stamp exhibition in the United States, World Stamp Show-NY 2016, is now less than two years away.

The show will take place May 28-June 4, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City. More than 200 dealers are expected to participate, and admission will be free for all eight days of the show.

Show organizers have marked the show’s progress with the release of Newsletter 4 on the website www.ny2016.org.

The newsletter provides a peek inside the Javits Center and the nearly 300,000 square feet of exhibition space that will be occupied by dealers, philatelic bureaus, societies and collectors.

A detailed floor plan will appear in a future newsletter and eventually on the show’s website.

While highlighting the 29 philatelic specialty societies attending World Stamp Show-NY 2016, the newsletter also invites other groups to participate.

Most of the attending groups will host annual meetings and present seminars on a variety of topics. The newsletter provides a list of participating organizations and links to their websites.

The Club de Monte-Carlo de la Philatelie in Monaco has accepted an invitation to have its members exhibit their world rarities in a special display at the show.

The club was formed in 1998 after the exhibition of “100 of the World’s Rarest Stamps and Philatelic Documents” in honor of the seven-century reign of the Grimaldi dynasty in the Principality of Monaco.

The World Stamp Show-NY 2016 newsletter also contains an open invitation to the new owner of the 1856 British Guiana 1¢ Magenta to display the unique stamp at the New York show’s court of honor.

The 1¢ Magenta, often described as the world’s most valuable stamp, has a scheduled date with the auction block on June 17, with Sotheby’s in New York City offering the stamp to the highest bidder.

Organizers are requesting stamp donations, with the hope of accumulating 1 million stamps to distribute to youths and beginners during activities and through giveaway packets.

Any donated quantity is appreciated, show organizers say, especially if the donations are sorted by United States, worldwide, and on or off paper.

Glassines, tongs, perforation gauges and other stamp hobby supplies are also needed. Items can be sent to Entry Level and Youth, World Stamp Show-NY 2016, 22 E. 35th Street, New York, NY 10016.

The newsletter also notes the possible availability of once-used exhibit frames after the show, seeks volunteers for a number of show projects, describes an April U.S. visit by Federation Internationale de Philatelie (FIP) board members, and reports a meeting between Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, show president Wade Saadi and the show’s executive director, Donna Richardson.
