As in previous years, Rarities Week, the series of sales conducted June 22-26 by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries in New York, included several name sales as well as an assortment of notable items from around the world. The week kicked off with something of a do-over: a sizable assortment of better United States stamps and covers that had appeared in four previous sales, but whose winning bidder then failed to pay for them.

Rasdale Stamp Co. is presenting its 425th public auction Aug. 15 and 16 at the firm’s gallery in Westmont, Ill., just west of Chicago. The auction lots are listed with images on the Rasdale Stamp Co. website, and bids can be placed online. The current sale consists of more than 575 lots from 85 owners, and ranges from single stamps and covers to large lots, accumulations and collections.

Less than a week after Canada Post ordered the recall and destruction of booklets and souvenir sheets with $1.20 stamps depicting inaccurate images of the Hoodoo rock formations, they became hot properties on the Internet auction website eBay.

Regency Superior held a sale June 3-7 in conjunction with the Napex stamp show in McLean, Va. The sale included space memorabilia and autographs, as well as stamps and postal history. In common with other such sales, however, there were some crossover items that covered multiple categories.

Harmers International held a sale of worldwide stamps and postal history at the Collectors Club in New York on June 6, including a numerous array of philatelic forgeries. The sale was previewed on the front page of the June 8 Linn’s. The top lot was a cover from Romania franked with an 1858 54-parale stamp showing the classic bull’s head Coat of Arms design.

An unused 90¢ blue George Washington from the 1857-61 stamp series will be offered at auction July 15-16.

The famed Locket Copy of the Inverted Jenny, the United States 24¢ airmail stamp of 1918 with the biplane in the center printed upside down in error, was sold in New York on May 20 by Stack’s Bowers Galleries in association with Sotheby’s.

The Richard C. Frajola collection of worldwide classic covers from philately’s earliest years was sold by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries in New York on May 19. The sale was previewed in Linn’s on May 18.

Interasia Auctions will offer a broad array of China, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong and Treaty Ports, and other Asian countries during a three-day auction July 18-20 at the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

Three rare, large blocks of early Chinese stamps that surfaced a few months ago in an English attic after lying hidden for more than a century were auctioned May 22 in Hong Kong by the firm of Kelleher & Rogers, Ltd. for close to $1 million.

In a move to expand the promotion of the next once-a-decade philatelic international exhibition to a wider and very active stamp community, World Stamp Show — NY 2016 has been selected as the presenting sponsor of the American Topical Association’s 66th annual National Topical Stamp Show.

The announcement in the June 22 Linn’s that the British Guiana 1¢ Magenta will be on display at the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum until November 2017 brought to mind an editorial in this publication in 1985 by former Linn’s editor-publisher Michael Laurence.

In London, Spink continued its multipart sale of the Lord Vestey collection with a sale of Western Australia on May 19. Western Australia was one of six states that combined to form Australia in 1901.

Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries offered the Hall collection April 28-30 in New York, in a 1,000-lot sale whose catalog ran to some 370 pages.

Cherrystone Auctions held a sale May 5-6 in New York with stamps and postal history of the world. The sale was previewed in Linn’s April 27 issue.
