Canada’s latest stamps to honor the national sport of hockey feature six goalies. The issue includes a booklet, a pane of stamps and labels and large stamps that look like sports cards.

Among the hot topics in this week's stamp news are: New York City, baseball, an 1847 Basel Dove cover, the A Charlie Brown Christmas stamps, and the beautiful stamps of Penrhyn Island.

Anne-Marie Stijelja recently gained some notable recognition in the United Kingdom's art world. The Northhamptonshire Telegraph highlights a mosaic of Queen Elizabeth II that Stijelja created using used postage stamps. It was on display for just a few short days late last month.

In mid-September I traveled to London, England, to attend Autumn Stampex, one of two British national stamp shows sponsored by the Philatelic Traders’ Society, Great Britain’s national stamp dealers association. The show took place Sept. 16-19 at the Business Design Centre in Islington (central north London), a comfortable and attractive venue for a stamp show.

A red, white and blue hot dog and a baseball jersey are pictured on new stamps from the Netherlands. These stamps are part of an annual series highlighting connections between the Netherlands and another country, in this case the United States.

On Sept. 28, Canada Post issued a new semipostal stamp to raise funds for the Canada Post Community Foundation. Canada Post describes this design as depicting “the power of storytelling and the freedom to pretend.”

The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum announced Sept. 22 a special showing of the world’s most famous and valuable stamp — the British Guiana 1¢ Magenta — at World Stamp Show – NY 2016. The special showing will take place May 28–June 3, 2016, at the Javits Center in New York City. Admission is free throughout all eight days of the show.

As Pope Francis makes his first visit to the United States, the eyes of the media and much of the world are on him. Many postage stamps have been issued honoring the pontiff.

When World Stamp Show — NY 2016 opens in the cavernous Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City May 28, 2016, fully 5,000 square feet of show space will be devoted to bringing the joys, wonders and excitement of stamp collecting to young and old alike.

On Sept. 14, Canada Post unveiled its second of three sets of Haunted Canada stamps. Recalling popular Canadian ghost stories, this series shines a spectral light on dark tales from throughout the land. Each of the five stamps focuses on a supernatural site, with images made extra eerie through the use of holographic foil.

The show intends on being one of the larger ones in the world. Competitive exhibits in traditional, postal history, thematic, revenue, postal stationery, aerophilately, open, literature, and youth classes will all be available for show-goers to enjoy.

Each stamp has its own means of demonstrating the sense, from flavoring, to texture, to changinging colors. Designed by Zinc Design of Dublin, the stamps are available in sheets of 16.

When Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning British sovereign at 63 years, 217 days on Wednesday, Sept. 9, Royal Mail changed the color of its most-used stamp, the nondenominated first-class Machin-head definitive, from red to amethyst purple.

Postal tax stamps are similar to semipostal stamps in that some or all of the proceeds from their sale goes to a charitable cause. They differ from semipostals stamps in that their use is mandatory for stated classes of mail for a set period.

The British colony of Montserrat in the Leeward Islands was never very prosperous, and an 1890 postal policy decreeing uniform stamp designs in the Leewards reduced the islands’ philatelic income. A 1903 set marked a return to distinctive stamp designs for the colony’s postal issues.

For the second consecutive Christmas season, the United States Postal Service is drawing from an animated television special for the subject of its holiday forever stamps. This year, Americans will see 10 different stamps commemorating A Charlie Brown Christmas, the popular family program that was first televised 50 years ago.
